Enhanced area functions for noise source modeling in the vocal tract
نویسنده
چکیده
The synthesis of natural-sounding fricatives based on a sourcefilter model is still a major challenge. While the filter is effectively modeled in terms of the vocal tract area function, noise sources are more difficult to model. Source properties critically depend on aerodynamic conditions and vocal tract geometry near the constriction in a way that is not fully understood. Therefore, noise source models usually assume different relations between noise source parameters and the aerodynamic state for different places of articulation. However, the place of articulation cannot be reliably determined from a dynamically changing area function, as in articulatory synthesis. Here we introduce the concept of an enhanced area function that adds the identity of the articulator that confines the vocal tract at the anterior-inferior side as a new layer of information to the classic area function. This allows to distinguish places of articulation and is therefore an effective representation of the vocal tract not only in terms of filter function but also for noise source modeling. A noise source model on this basis is presented.

Noise Sources and Area Functions for the Synthesis of Fricative Consonants
In this study, we characterize the noise sources and the critical parts of vocal tract area functions for the synthesis of voiceless fricatives. We derive these characteristics indirectly by fitting synthetic to natural fricative spectra in an interactive procedure. The adjustable parameters are the number, location, type, amplitude, and spectral shape of the noise sources as well as the cross-...
متن کاملModeling of a speech production system based on MRI measurement of three-dimensional vocal tract shapes during fricative consonant phonation
This study, based on the measurement of three-dimensional (3-D) vocal tract shapes during fricative consonant phonation, presents a realistic modeling of a human speech production system. The 3-D shapes of a vocal tract and a dental crown were measured using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). A male subject was asked to produce the fricatives /s/ and /6/ while wearing a dental crown plate that c...
متن کاملContinuous Voice Morphing Using Separated Vocal Tract Area Functions and Glottal Source Waves
This paper presents a flexible voice morphing method, which is based on a conversion using a linear combination of the vocal tract area functions estimated from speech signals. The method focuses on the continuity of the phonological identity of the overall interpolated area. The main features of the method are 1) to separate characteristics of the vocal tract resonances from those of glottal s...
متن کاملEffects of Voice Therapy on Vocal Tract Discomfort in Muscle Tension Dysphonia
Introduction: Patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) suffer from several physical discomforts in their vocal tract. However, few studies have examined the effects of voice therapy (VT) on the vocal tract discomfort (VTD) in patients with voice disorders. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of VT on the VTD in patients with MTD. Materi...
متن کاملA Segmentation and Analysis Method for MRI Data of the Human Vocal Tract
In this paper a method for three-dimensional modeling of the human vocal tract based on T1-weighted MRI data sets is introduced. This includes the reconstruction of the vocal tract shape and the computation of the vocal tract midline. Reconstruction of the vocal tract shape is realized by three-dimensional region growing within the vocal tract after teeth phantoms are matched into the MRI data ...
